Taking care of your Florida Lawn (Introduction)

Sod production in Florida is a billion dollar industry. Most imagine that sod production is fueled by the booming housing market which while mainly true, fails to recognize how much existing sod is replaced yearly. Think of the monetary and environmental impact of tearing out and replacing sod at your house. With costs continuing to rise, a smaller labor pool, and a more conscientious effort to reduce environmental impacts, homeowners must learn how to care for their lawns (or hire someone that understands how to do properly maintain a healthy lawn and landscape).

This simple guide is designed to help the average Florida homeowner to save money, have a healthy lawn, and reduce the negative environmental impact that replacing a lawn will inevitably have. The goal of this guide is to save you money, create a beautiful yard to look at, and to reduce non-point source pollution of our valuable waterways.

To achieve a healthy lawn in Florida, the odds are really against you. Most of our soils are sandy, we have high temperatures most of the year, and most of our rainfall happens in short spans. In addition, much of our population are living here part of the year. I have taken all these factors into account in order to cover each scenario to better ensure a positive outcome for your lawn.

My hope is that with some basic help, you can achieve your lawncare goals and reduce the environmental impact caused by overlooking some fundamental principles of caring for turf.
